IT Works Corporation, creators of the EZ brand of parental control software is committed
to providing software solutions and advice to assist parents to manage the time
children spend on computers and limit the content children are exposed to while
using computers.
Recently a 13 year old boy, who became addicted to the XBOX and
on line gaming, ran away from home and has been missing for 3 weeks. The boy ran
away after his parents, acting responsibly, took away his XBOX. It was the final
solution for them because their son would not willingly cut down on his gaming time.
In response IT Works purchased an XBOX to determine if EZ Off could be integrated
into the XBOX system allowing parents to set up a daily usage timer. We found that
the system could not be altered to allow for the EZ Off timer. More importantly,
we found that Microsoft, creators of the XBOX, had already built-in parental controls.
It is understandable how parents may miss this important aspect of the XBOX set
up. We missed it ourselves in the rush to set it up and get it working. IT Works
will be contacting Microsoft to request that the built in timer control benefits
be prominently displayed on the packaging.
In the product manual titled “Volume
1, Setup” (on page 12) there is a section called “XBOX 360 FAMILY SETTINGS”. This
section discusses the intentions of Microsoft to provide a positive gaming experience
for the family and briefly describes the attributes of the “Family Settings”.
However, if you want further details of how to set up the “Family Settings” you must visit the
XBOX Family Settings web site
and view the instructions to setting up the family timer.
As parents it is our job to protect our children even if that means
being at odds with them. Video games, text messaging and web surfing can all become
addictive. We urge parents to limit the amount of time children are exposed to them.
My heart goes out to the parents of the Barrie, Ontario boy who’s been missing for
so long, I know what you are going through. I lost my daughter online and I live
with it everyday.
